Total time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
For the gnocchi
500 g (1.1 lb) potato gnocchi
1 tablespoon salt, for boiling water
For the creamy cheese sauce
2 tablespoons butter
2 cloves garlic, finely minced
1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream
½ cup (120 ml) whole milk
1 cup (100 g) freshly grated mozzarella
¾ cup (75 g) grated Parmesan cheese
½ cup (50 g) grated Gruyère or cheddar
½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning
Pinch of nutmeg, optional
For finishing
Extra Parmesan
Freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon chopped parsley, optional
Small knob of butter, optional
Method
- Cook the gnocchi
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook according to the package instructions.
Usually, gnocchi are ready when they float to the surface. Remove them with a slotted spoon and reserve about ½ cup of the cooking water. - Make the sauce
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30–60 seconds, just until fragrant. Don’t let the garlic brown.
Pour in the heavy cream and milk. Stir and allow the mixture to gently simmer for 2–3 minutes.
- Add the cheese
Reduce the heat to low.
Gradually add the mozzarella, Parmesan, and Gruyère or cheddar, stirring continuously until the cheese melts into a smooth, creamy sauce.
Add black pepper, Italian seasoning, salt, and a tiny pinch of nutmeg if desired.
Tip: Keep the heat low when adding cheese. Very high heat can cause the sauce to become oily or grainy.
- Combine
Add the cooked gnocchi to the cheese sauce and gently fold everything together.
If the sauce is too thick, add reserved gnocchi cooking water 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach a silky, coating consistency. - Make it extra cheesy
For the appearance shown in the photo, transfer the gnocchi to an oven-safe baking dish.
Sprinkle another handful of mozzarella and Parmesan over the top.
Bake at 200°C / 400°F for 5–8 minutes, then broil/grill for 1–2 minutes until the cheese is melted and lightly golden.
- Serve
Finish with freshly cracked black pepper, Parmesan, and a little parsley.
Serve immediately while the cheese is still stretchy and creamy.
Benefits
Although this is an indulgent comfort food rather than a low-calorie dish, it does provide several nutrients:
Potato gnocchi provide carbohydrates for energy.
Cheese and milk provide protein and calcium.
Garlic contributes flavorful plant compounds and antioxidants.
Black pepper adds flavor without requiring much additional salt.
Adding vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, or peas can increase the fiber and micronutrient content.
For a lighter version, use less cream and cheese and add vegetables or a lean protein such as grilled chicken.

History
Gnocchi are traditional Italian dumplings, with potato gnocchi becoming particularly popular after potatoes were introduced to Europe from the Americas. Different regions of Italy have developed their own versions, using ingredients such as potatoes, flour, ricotta, spinach, or other vegetables.
Gnocchi are traditionally served with many different sauces, including tomato sauces, butter and sage, pesto, and cheese-based sauces. Creamy cheese gnocchi is a particularly popular modern comfort-food preparation because the soft dumplings readily absorb rich sauces.
Conclusion
This creamy cheesy gnocchi is a simple but luxurious meal: soft gnocchi + buttery garlic cream sauce + plenty of melted cheese + freshly cracked pepper. For the closest match to the photograph, don’t skimp on the mozzarella, finish it under the grill/broiler, and serve it immediately while the cheese is hot and stretchy.
Best variation: Add sautéed mushrooms and spinach before combining the gnocchi with the sauce for a more balanced one-pan meal.
