1. Spiral Sunflower Petals
Make 5–7 spiral pieces for the hanging decoration.
Center
With dark brown yarn:
Round 1: MR, 6 sc into the ring. (6)
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around. (12)
Round 3:
1 sc, inc around. (18)
Fasten off or change to golden-yellow yarn.
Golden petal section
Join golden-yellow yarn.
Round 4:
1 sc in next 2 sts, inc around. (24)
Round 5:
1 sc in next 3 sts, inc around. (30)
Round 6:
1 sc in next 4 sts, inc around. (36)
Continue increasing in this manner until the piece reaches approximately 9–11 cm in diameter.
Do not finish it as a flat circle. Instead, continue working around while gradually making the outer portion wider so that the piece naturally curls into a spiral.
Creating the spiral shape
Work a final decorative round around the outside:
sl st, sc, hdc, 2 dc in next stitch, hdc, sc, sl st
Repeat around the edge.
This creates the slightly scalloped sunflower edge visible in the photograph.
2. Green Border
Attach olive-green yarn around the outer edge.
Work:
sl st in next stitch, sc in next stitch, 3 sc in next stitch, sc in next stitch
Repeat around the entire outside edge.
The green edging should remain slightly tight so the sunflower piece curls naturally.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
3. Make the Spiral Curl
Lay the finished sunflower piece flat.
Starting from one side, gently twist/curve the piece so that it forms a loose spiral or half-moon shape, as shown in the photo.
Use a few small stitches with brown yarn near the center to hold the desired curve.
Do not make every piece identical. Slight differences in the curve give the hanging decoration its natural appearance.
Make 5–7 pieces.
4. Central Hanging Cord
With dark brown yarn, make a long chain approximately 50–65 cm long.
For a stronger cord, instead of leaving it as a simple chain, work:
Row 1: sc in each chain across.
Fold or twist the cord slightly and secure the ends.
This becomes the central vertical stem.
5. Attach the Spiral Flowers
Starting approximately 5–7 cm from the top, attach the first spiral.
Use dark brown yarn to stitch the center of the spiral securely to the hanging cord.
Leave approximately 5–7 cm between each spiral.
Alternate their orientation:
- First spiral curves toward the right
- Second curves toward the left
- Third toward the right
- Fourth toward the left
- Continue alternating
This produces the twisting appearance shown in the picture.
6. Small Sunflower at the Bottom
Brown center
With dark brown yarn:
Round 1: MR, 6 sc. (6)
Round 2: inc around. (12)
Round 3:
1 sc, inc around. (18)
Fasten off.
Yellow petals
Join golden-yellow yarn.
For each petal:
ch 4, beginning in the second chain from hook:
- sl st
- sc
- hdc
Sl st into the next brown stitch.
Repeat around the entire center to create approximately 10–12 petals.
For fuller petals, use:
ch 5 → sl st, sc, hdc, dc → sl st into next stitch.
Continue around until the sunflower is complete.
7. Green/Yellow Bottom Piece
For the larger sunflower shown at the bottom, repeat the same flower construction but make it slightly larger.
Use:
- Dark brown center
- Golden-yellow petals
- Optional olive-green edging
Add a small brown loop at the top.
8. Connecting the Bottom Flower
Make a small chain of 6–8 stitches with dark brown yarn.
Fold it into a loop and attach it to the bottom of the central cord.
Attach the sunflower securely to this loop.
Add a small bead or crocheted brown ball between the cord and flower if desired.
9. Top Hanging Loop
At the top of the central cord, make a loop with approximately 12–15 chains.
Slip stitch back into the beginning of the chain.
Fasten off securely.
This allows the finished crochet spiral to be hung from a hook, window, wall, or ceiling.
Finishing
Gently shape each spiral with your fingers. If necessary, lightly dampen the crochet and allow it to dry in the desired spiral position.
For the look in the photo, keep the brown center prominent, use golden yellow for the petals, and finish every spiral with a dark olive-green scalloped border.
Important: Because the photograph shows only the finished object and not the original designer’s instructions, stitch counts and construction above are a close reconstruction, not a guaranteed exact copy of the original pattern.
