Philly Cheesesteak Meatloaf

Ingredients

For the meatloaf:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • ½ lb (225 g) ground pork
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the cheese filling and topping:

  • 6–8 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup, for glazing

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a loaf pan or baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Heat a little oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, green pepper, and mushrooms. Cook for 5–7 minutes, until softened. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Let the vegetables cool slightly.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Add the cooled sautéed vegetables and gently mix until everything is evenly combined. Avoid overmixing so the meatloaf stays tender.
  5. Place about half of the meat mixture on the prepared pan and shape it into a loaf.
  6. Make a shallow well through the center and place 4–5 slices of provolone or mozzarella cheese inside. Cover completely with the remaining meat mixture and seal the edges.
  7. Spread a thin layer of ketchup over the top and sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese.
  8. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the center reaches 160°F (71°C).
  9. Remove from the oven and let the meatloaf rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing. This helps the cheese stay inside and keeps the meatloaf juicy.
  10. Slice thickly and serve warm with the melted cheese, sautéed peppers, onions, and mushrooms.

Tips

For an extra Philly cheesesteak flavor, use provolone cheese and sauté the vegetables until lightly caramelized before adding them to the meat mixture.

You can also add a little extra cheese on top during the final 5 minutes of baking for an especially gooey, golden crust.
