Ingredients
For the dough
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 packet (7 g) active dry yeast
1 cup warm milk
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
For the filling
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
For the icing (optional)
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons cream cheese (optional)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2–3 tablespoons milk
Instructions
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and let it rest for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the eggs, melted butter, and the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon for the filling.
Roll out the dough into a large rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Spread softened butter evenly over the surface, then sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture across the dough.
Starting from one long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut into 12 even slices.
Place the rolls in a greased baking pan, leaving a little space between them. Cover and let them rise again for about 30–45 minutes until puffy.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown.
For the icing, whisk together powdered sugar, melted butter, vanilla, and milk until smooth. Spread over warm rolls before serving.
History
Cinnamon rolls trace their origins to Northern Europe, particularly Sweden, where they are known as “kanelbullar.” The Swedes have celebrated their love for these rolls since the early 20th century, with a national Cinnamon Roll Day held every October. The American version evolved to be richer and sweeter, often topped with creamy icing, thanks to the abundance of dairy and sugar in U.S. baking traditions.
Benefits
Cinnamon rolls, when enjoyed in moderation, offer both comfort and energy. The cinnamon provides natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, while the warm, yeasted dough delivers carbohydrates that boost energy. Homemade versions allow better control over sugar and fat content, making them a delightful treat with a personal touch.
Conclusion
Soft, fluffy, and packed with cinnamon sweetness, these homemade cinnamon rolls are the perfect treat for breakfast or dessert. Whether shared with family or enjoyed with a cup of coffee, their comforting aroma and taste make them a timeless classic.
