This pattern is reconstructed from the photo you provided. The original written pattern is not visible, so the stitch counts below are designed to closely reproduce the same four-wing butterfly shape.
Approximately 10–12 cm wide using medium-weight cotton yarn and a 2.5–3.0 mm crochet hook.
Medium-weight cotton yarn
2.5–3.0 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors
Optional: fabric stiffener
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet
st = stitch
sp = space
Make a magic ring.
Round 1:
Ch 3, which counts as the first dc.
Work 11 dc into the ring.
Sl st into the top of the beginning ch-3.
You should have 12 dc.
Do not cut the yarn.
Pull the center tightly closed.
This small ring forms the center of the butterfly.
The butterfly is made by working four wings around the center.
Attach or continue the yarn at the center.
Ch 8.
Join with a sl st to the center ring to form a large loop.
This chain loop will become the foundation of the first wing.
Work around the chain loop:
3 sc
3 hdc
5 dc
3 tr
5 dc
3 hdc
3 sc
Sl st back into the center.
You should now have an elongated oval-shaped wing.
Continue around the outside of the wing with sc.
At the pointed end, work:
1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc
Then continue with sc around the remaining edge.
At the inner end, make a sl st into the center.
This gives the wing the slightly pointed shape visible in the photograph.
From the center, ch 8 again.
Join to the center with a sl st to create the second large loop.
Work into the chain:
3 sc
3 hdc
5 dc
3 tr
5 dc
3 hdc
3 sc
Sl st into the center.
Repeat the shaping round:
Sc around the entire wing.
At the outer tip:
1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc
Continue with sc and finish with a sl st at the center.
The two upper wings should now resemble two elongated petals.
Return to the center.
Ch 9.
Join with a sl st to the center to make a slightly larger loop.
Work around the loop:
4 sc
3 hdc
6 dc
4 tr
6 dc
3 hdc
4 sc
Sl st into the center.
The lower wings should be slightly wider than the upper wings.
Work sc around the wing.
At the widest/outer end, work:
1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc
Continue around and finish with a sl st at the center.
Repeat the same procedure on the opposite side.
Ch 9.
Join to the center.
Work:
4 sc
3 hdc
6 dc
4 tr
6 dc
3 hdc
4 sc
Sl st into the center.
Work sc around the outside.
At the tip:
1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc
Finish at the center with a sl st.
You should now have four wings.
The butterfly in the photo has small open spaces inside each wing.
To create these, work toward the center of each wing and make small chain arches.
For each opening:
Skip 2–3 stitches.
Ch 2 or ch 3.
Skip 2–3 stitches.
Sc into the next stitch.
Repeat where necessary.
Keep the openings relatively small so the wing retains its solid oval appearance.
You can make approximately 2–3 openings in each large wing.
Work one final round of sc around each wing.
At curves, use 2 sc in selected stitches to keep the edge smooth.
At the pointed end, work:
sc, ch 2, sc
This creates the pointed tips seen in the photograph.
Sl st into the center after completing each wing.
The body can be made separately or directly over the center.
Chain 6.
Starting in the second chain from the hook, work:
5 sc
Turn.
Work 5 sc across.
Repeat for approximately 3–4 rows.
Fold the small strip lengthwise and sew or slip-stitch the edges together.
Place it over the center of the butterfly and sew it securely.
Alternatively, wrap yarn several times tightly around the center to create the narrow body shown in the photograph.
Cut two pieces of yarn approximately 10–12 cm long.
Insert them through the top of the butterfly body.
Tie them securely.
Twist or braid each strand slightly.
Trim the ends evenly.
Weave all yarn ends into the back of the butterfly.
Gently stretch each wing into the desired shape.
For a more structured butterfly, lightly stiffen the piece and allow it to dry completely.
For the same look as the photograph, use cotton yarn and keep the stitches fairly tight.
Upper wings:
ch 8 → join → sc → hdc → dc → tr → dc → hdc → sc → shape edge
Lower wings:
ch 9 → join → sc → hdc → dc → tr → dc → hdc → sc → shape edge
The important part is keeping the four wings symmetrical, with the lower wings slightly larger and fuller than the upper wings.
