BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING

Bread and Butter Pudding is a classic and comforting dessert that’s easy to make. Here’s a simple recipe for you:

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of bread (white or whole wheat), crusts removed
  • Butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup raisins or sultanas (optional)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ground nutmeg or cinnamon for sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Generously butter each slice of bread on one side.
  3. Cut the bread into triangles or squares, and arrange half of them, buttered side up, in a buttered baking dish. Sprinkle raisins or sultanas over the bread, if using.
  4. Arrange the remaining bread slices on top, creating a kind of sandwich.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring that all the bread is soaked. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.
  7. Sprinkle ground nutmeg or cinnamon over the top for added flavor.
  8. Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan and fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the smaller dish. This water bath helps the pudding cook evenly.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  10. Allow the bread and butter pudding to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Serve warm, and you can optionally top it with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of custard. This delicious and nostalgic dessert is perfect for any occasion. Enjoy your Bread and Butter Pudding!
